134. Oscar Benedict8 McAtee (George Henry7, Benjamin Benedict6, George5, William4, William3, Edmund Charles2, Patrick1) was born 1885. Oscar died 1952 at 67 years of age. The following is from a letter from Mary Jane McAtee to Gary McAtee about her father (Oscar McAtee):

May 31, 1999

"My Dad [Oscar McAtee], your grandfather, was a farmer in Kansas. He also butchered cattle, bought live and shipped them to Kansas City stock yards. Then he owned a meat market and grocery store in Palmer, Kansas. It burned down. They [Oscar & Margaret] came out to Oregon again. Started the grocery store in Oakridge- along with a hotel, baber shop, and tavern. He bought the ranch for taxes (1929-30) from C.A. Ryker, I think. Also the place in Willamette City for taxes too. It wasn't W. City then. Dad named it [with suggestion from Ethan Newman]. Around 1930's he sold the store to Richter and moved upon the ranch--High Prairie. Dad hurt himself and Richter went broke. We moved down to W. [Willamette] City and took back the store. Hazel and Sherman lived behind the store. Then I had to start school - no buses - so we moved back up to Oakridge behind the store. Hazel and Sherman moved up to the ranch; our uncle Clint and aunt Jean - who lived on the ranch. We had a three family move that day. On September 17, 1935 everything of Dad's burned up in Oakridge. On October 23, 1935 Dad opened the store in W. City. Then he built the garage, cabins, and several houses. Then built a bowling alley (burned down in 1950). Dad had our house built in 1939, he semi-retired, taking care of his businesses and family. He loved to fish (everywhere from LaPine, East Lake) to the ocean. And also loved to hunt too. Rabbits, deer, elk, etc. Loved to play all kinds of cards. He was one of the top checker players around. Visit with his family, picnics, anything to do with the family. We made long trips every summer whenever he could get away. I can remember five trips to Kansas we took by train, 1932, 1938, 1941, 1945 and 1949. Just Mother and Dad and me. Before me, the family made several trips. Dad and Mom loved to camp out too, also gardening. Mother sewed, made dresses (with no pattern, either) and all kinds of quilts and hand crafts." His body was interred 1952 in Eugene, Oregon.
